Women take time away from their careers for a variety of reasons. Some leave a prized job with intentions of soon returning, others leave unexpectedly without a clear return plan, and still, others find themselves laid off and facing other pressing obligations. With family time ranking highest among the reasons that women leave the “fast lane,” according to Harvard Business Review, the path to returning is often unclear. As personal circumstances evolve, finding time to conduct a job search can be challenging. For those who have been away from paid work for an extended period, workplace changes both perceived and real can make identifying a job or plan daunting.
Career Coach Michelle Galbraith works with clients at Amy Cell Talent to manage concerns about starting a job search by following a three-pronged approach of identifying who they are as a professional, where they find the most satisfaction, and planning a strategy of how to network into the right situation. “Your skills are your skills, no matter where you are now and where you would like to be. If you’ve got both passion and experience organizing and executing events, those skills carry over no matter the particulars of the event or its audience.”
Galbraith points out that if a job posting or informational interview reveals that you don’t have experience with the project planning software or tool that a target employer is using, this gives you a clear plan to update your skills. She refers clients to websites like www.lynda.com and www.edx.org for rapid skill updates.
